WordPress maintenance vs managed hosting: what is the difference?

Managed hosting and WordPress maintenance often get bundled together, which makes it surprisingly difficult to work out what you are actually paying for.

At the simplest level, hosting is where your website lives. Maintenance is looking after the website that lives there.

Managed hosting adds more support around the hosting environment, but that still does not necessarily mean somebody is taking responsibility for everything happening inside WordPress.

What does managed WordPress hosting normally cover?

A good managed WordPress host will usually look after the infrastructure underneath the website. That might include server security, backups, caching, SSL, uptime, PHP versions and tools designed specifically for running WordPress reliably.

Some hosts will also offer automated WordPress and plugin updates, staging environments and additional security features.

That can remove a lot of technical responsibility from you, but there is an important boundary. Your hosting company may make sure the server is working perfectly while a plugin conflict has broken your enquiry form.

From their perspective, the hosting is doing exactly what it should.

What does WordPress maintenance add?

Maintenance tends to sit one level above the hosting.

It is concerned with the actual website: WordPress itself, the theme, plugins, integrations, forms, content and the things your customers interact with.

If Elementor stops loading, WooCommerce starts behaving strangely or an update breaks part of your design, that is normally a website support problem rather than a hosting problem.

A maintenance service may also include small development jobs, content updates and somebody who can actually make changes to the site rather than simply keep the infrastructure running.

Do you need both?

Often, yes, although they can come from the same provider.

A business-critical website needs good hosting underneath it and somebody taking responsibility for WordPress itself. What you do not necessarily need is two completely separate companies pointing at one another whenever something breaks.

There is nothing wrong with using specialist managed hosting and a separate WordPress developer if you are happy with that arrangement. Equally, having hosting and maintenance handled together can make troubleshooting simpler because there is one place responsible for understanding the whole setup.

The important thing is knowing where the boundaries are before there is a problem.

If you already have managed hosting and are wondering whether it covers everything you need, send us the details. We can normally tell fairly quickly whether you are genuinely covered or whether there is a gap between looking after the server and looking after the website.

Summary

  • Hosting = the server where the website lives – you need to manage it, that means sorting it out if it stops working or becomes insecure.
  • Managed Hosting = the server where the website lives – a company monitors it, makes sure it keeps working, stays secure and has software updates when required.
  • WordPress maintenance = Working on the website itself, including:
    • Monitoring site up-time
    • Responding when site is reported down
    • Responding to reported errors in server which may silently affect performance
    • Keeping the site software up to date, secure and running,
    • fixing problems if they occur after updates,
    • making changes,
    • optimising the speed of the site
    • SEO/GEO work
    • Mitigating hacking attempts (there are many)
    • Ensuring website emails are delivered junk-free
    • Set up and run Google Search Console, make required changes to optimise
    • Set up and run Google Analytics, make required changes to optimise
